Belts are the slimming fashion fixer uppers. They can make almost any fashion outfit look composed, assembled, and chic. There are thin belts, wide belts, corset belts, belts of various materials and lengths. The catch is that not every woman can wear a belt of specific style. Depending on your body shape, certain belts may not look particularly flattering. So, how do you wear belts to suit your body shape and what do you need to look for in a belt?
Size Does Matter
There are wide belts, skinny belts, corset belts, and the plain sized belt – the one that keeps your trousers up.
1. How to Wear Wide Belts
A wide belt can create that dramatic illusion of a slimmer waist, while keeping your lumps contained. The wide belt is intriguing and sophisticated with any fashion outfit. Banana shaped women wearing wide belts may, however, create the illusion of a boxier, square shaped body; thus, wide belts are not recommended for banana shaped women.
2. How to Wear Skinny Belts
A skinny belt is a more polite and subtle gesture, yet a powerful one when it comes to creating a slimming illusion. Skinny belts are wonderful accessories for adding a touch of sophistication and elegance. They also work quite well with workwear by making any workwear look fresh and smart. How do you wear a skinny belt, you may wonder, to receive the full slimming effect? By wrapping it around the thinnest part of your waist you can draw attention to that very spot, thus giving your shape a slimmer contour. The skinny belt look is particularly flattering on slimmer women, as long as the belt is not worn too tight. As with clothes, belts need to fit properly as not to reveal or exaggerate your extra bits.
A corset belt is one of the more universal belts, which looks great on practically any body shape. The belt will cinch your midsection, giving most body shapes an hourglass figure.
3. Belts for Dresses
With dresses, the belt must fall at your natural waist. Depending on the dress and the fabric of the dress, you can pull the dress a bit above the belt, leaving the fabric to drape over casually. This look can also camouflage any tummy insecurities you may have. My favourite part: by wearing belts with maxi dresses this autumn I can avoid saying goodbye to my favourite dresses for a bit longer!
4. Belts for Sweaters
We have stressed multiple times not to wear fashion outfits that are not fitted. Well, sometimes we do make exceptions. Who doesn’t love an oversized sweater on a chilly day? Now you can make your oversized sweater look fitted by wrapping a belt around the thinnest part of your waist.
5. Belts and Workwear
One of my favourite workwear outfit styling tricks is to wrap a belt around my blazer. Make sure to button your blazer for a more chic and sophisticated look. You can also replace your blazer with a waistcoat to spice up your wardrobe and style.
6. Creating the Peplum Look
For those who are willing to dive into more unfamiliar shores, the peplum experiment is for you. It works best with sweaters that are mid length. All you have to do is wrap a skinny belt loosely just above your hips, smooth out the sweater and enjoy your slimming look.
Recommendations For The Two More Difficult Shapes To Find The Right Belt
Do you have an apple shaped body? A wide belt – to keep your extra bits safely tucked in – or the widest skinny belt – to create the illusion of a slimmer waist – will look best on you. Choose darker coloured belts for an extra slimming effect.
Banana shaped women are recommended to experiment with slimmer belts. This autumn you can wrap your skinny belt around your sweater or coat to exaggerate your curves, achieving an hourglass figure.
A belt is more than an accessory, it’s a slimming agent for all women!
