It’s coat season, and thank goodness! Coats come in various styles, and are not all meant for all body shapes. You should not choose to purchase a coat merely because its good enough, as in it fits and the price tag is suitable, rather you should look at the fit, the illusion it creates on your figure and the way it shapes your body, amongst qualities like price and warmth. As I feel quite passionate about this topic, and it breaks my heart to see the brutal way we often select our coats, I have created a piece for women, according to their body shapes, on how to select the best autumn coat for their figure. Let’s dive right in:
Best Coats for your Body Shape: Apple Shaped Women
For apple shaped women, the focus, as with any other fashion outfit, is on creating the illusion of a waist. Therefore, when choosing a coat, select those that nip at your waist, cinch just below the bust, or have a belt that falls around the thinnest part of your waistline. A coat that nips at the waist or is belted will slim your waist and trim your stomach area. Furthermore, opt out for coats that create a deep V-neck, which will slim your figure and nicely shape your bust – and in general look gorgeous on your body shape. If you are a bustier apple shaped woman, the intention is to minimize your bust and draw the eyes downwards, without placing focus on your midsection, an A-line coat will bring the focus downwards while concealing your tummy and thighs.
When it comes to the length of the coat, the coat should never hit around the widest part of your hips and thus should fall mid-thigh. On your body shape, coats that fall knee-length are also flattering and stunning.
If you wish to wear a coat with a bit of detail, choose coats with vertical lines, which will slim your entire figure by elongating your silhouette. Your shape should not stop you from wearing a bit of colour; take your pick from neutrals to olive, camel and even scarlet this autumn.
Things to avoid:
- Shoulder pads, shoulder gathers, pleats
- Double-breasted options
- Bold and big, printed patterns
Best Coats for Different Body Shapes: Pear Shaped Women
Pear shaped women need to widen their upper half to bring balance to their body shape. With the right autumn coat – one with shoulder pads or collar details – you can widen your shoulders and draw eyes up towards the bust, also creating the illusion of a slimmer figure. Autumn coats that are fitted around your upper half and are looser around your tummy, hips and thighs are also quite flattering and slimming. To show off your gorgeous personality, feel free to pick coats with detail around your bust and/or shoulders, and even around the cuffs. Double breasted coats, coats that accent your small waist, and A-line coats will also look brilliant on your body shape.
The length of the coat, which will look best on your body shape is that which falls just around your hipbone or past the thickest part of your thighs.
Things to Avoid:
- Shorter length coats that end at your buttocks
- Details around your stomach and thighs
- Horizontal patterns
Best coats for your body shape: Hourglass Shaped Women
Women of an hourglass shape should aim to accentuate their already defined waist. Fitted coats that emphasise your waist will exaggerate your shape, while slimming your figure. Single-breasted options, coats with skirted bottoms, and belted coats are also exceptionally stunning on you.
As an hourglass shape, length is typically not an issue. Long length coats will further slim your body shape and make you look leaner. Details around the waist of your coat are a beautiful and sophisticated touch, which will also show off your lovely shape.
- Vertical and straight lines
Coats for Different Body Shapes: Banana Shaped Women
Banana shaped women can create volume and accentuate their curves with the perfect autumn coat. Double-breasted coats will create volume around your bust, while belted coats, particularly coats with belted-peplum middle, will exaggerate your lower half to give you an hourglass shape. Coats that flare out from the waist and coats that end right at your hips will create the illusion of a curvier body.
- Straight, vertical lines
- Boy cut coats
I believe that coats should be viewed as either accessories or as the main fashion outfit. As you begin to experiment with autumn coats that fit your body shape, I hope you will start to share my belief. Dress for your body shape and love your body.
