Pleats are one of the most flattering and feminine fashion outfit items. Thus, every woman needs to know how to utilize pleats for her own advantage, meaning, she needs to know how to style her pleats and what pleats to wear to suit her body shape, and make her look thinner. So, place those images of prep school uniforms and unflattering secretary pleats aside and let’s dive into the world of gorgeous, feminine pleats that make you look thin, elegant and brilliant.
Now, it is true that pleats do often widen our lower half, however, as we have learned, this doesn’t mean that pleats will make us look fatter. If worn correctly, pleats can thin the silhouette and make us look slimmer.
The Knife Pleat
What is the knife pleat? The knife pleat – also, often known as a side pleat – has folds that are pressed in the same direction. A knife pleat looks particularly gorgeous and sophisticated when in full, as in a maxi skirt. A maxi, knife pleated skirt will exert a more elegant and dressy style, however, if you are looking for a more casual look, you can pair it with a simple blouse. Don’t underestimate the impact of your shoes on your overall pleated look; classic pumps or stilettos can take you from casual to classy, in seconds. To look skinny, wear a simple, V-neck blouse and tuck it in to accent your waist and give you an hourglass shape. For women with larger and rounder tummies, pleats are your perfect go-to item to conceal and slim your midsection.
The Pleated Dress
This is one of my most favourite style of dresses; a dress that incorporates a pleated skirt with gentle folds to give your shape a structure. For a woman of an hourglass shape, the pleated dress will emphasise your curves and shape, while for others, it will create the illusion of an hourglass shape. Women of any body-shape should opt-out for more structured pleated dresses, particularly those that accent the waist or have a belt. Again, go for V-neck or button down dresses, with an A-line skirt. These dresses will accent your bust, slim your extra bits, and give you an extra classic and flirtatious look.
Did I mention that there are pleated jumpers! Pleated jumpers are particularly flattering on pear-shaped women, as they widen the upper half, conceal and slim the lower half and give the overall shape a balanced illusion. Not to mention, pleated jumpers are ideal for a fun, youthful look, and I wholeheartedly recommend women of a more ripened age to give them a try, and experiment with different pleated styles.
The Retro Pleat
Perhaps, one of the more famous pleated skirts: the retro pleat is particularly feminine. To look slimmer, choose an A-line, maxi or midi retro pleat. The length of the retro pleat will elongate your silhouette, conceal your hips and thighs – or give your thin legs some volume. An A-line retro pleat will also direct eyes to your thin waist, creating the illusion of a thinner yet curvier and sexier body.
The Metallic Pleated Skirts
From personal observation, I have noticed that women tend to shy away from metallic pleated skirts. I am here to try and convince you that your fears are groundless. Metallic pleated skirts are back in style and should be embraced and experimented. The metallic pleated skirt will horizontally lengthen the lines of your body, giving you some extra height, and thus, will slim your figure. These pleated goddesses are also ideal for an easy day-to-night styling; all you have to do is choose the appropriate blouse – for a casual or cozy look pair it with a sweatshirt.
To summarize, pleats can accent your waist, elongate your figure, conceal your more flabby bits, and shape your figure slimmer and thinner.
Happy pleat shopping!
