Patterns make life fun and rich – that’s what I have come to believe anyway. There is an ocean of patterns out there; each pattern unique and exciting in its own way. Patterns can make your fashion outfits fun, bold, or sophisticate and elegant, or even calm and gentle. Patterns can also slim your figure, balance your body shape, add some height, emphasise your bust and more. In this piece, we will focus on which patterns are flattering for your body shape, and how to use patterns to balance your shape and slim your look.
Let our journey begin into the depth of florals, stripes, animal prints, polka dots and other creative prints!
Tiny Patterns for the Petite
As we all know by now, not all patterns are suitable for all body shapes. When its comes to petite women, your height can make things even more difficult, well, when it comes to fashion outfits at least. Patterns can be on your side or against you, depending on the pattern. For example, vertical stripes will always be on your side, elongating and lengthening your figure. If you do not fancy stripes, we recommend small, tiny patterns, particularly if they are arranged to create the illusion of stripes.
Large patterns, around the size of golf balls, will overpower your figure and overwhelm your height, making you look even shorter – not recommended. You can match your small print or striped blouse with an A-line skirt, compliment it with some nude heels without any straps for some added height and a well-balanced figure.
Bold Patterns for the Lean Banana-Shaped
Patterns look great on banana-shaped women. Unlike a petite woman, you are free to rock large prints – the bolder the better. Large prints will enhance your curves, round you up, and making you look less gangly. They will also draw eyes away from your slim arms and legs and place the focus on your bust and torso. Prints that are too fine and stripes, can however, make you seem even taller and out of proportion. A blouse with large prints and an A-line skirt will not only emphasise your upper half, but will also create the illusion of a waist, thus making your seem curvier and sexier.
Busy Patterns for the Pear-Shaped
For a pear-shaped woman, patterns can become a powerful tool to create the illusion of a more balanced figure. By using patterns, you can draw eyes onto your torso, and minimise your lower half. Blouses with large or busy prints will emphasise your torso, while a clean, structured skirt or a straight-leg trouser will slim your bottom half. You are free to experiment with wild and colorful prints for blouses. Vertical stripes may elongate your body, while a horizontal stripes can balance out your top. When it comes to dresses, an empire – waist dress with bold or moderate print will slim you down and provide the shape you want.
Diagonal Stripes for the Apple-Shaped
The same applies for our apple-shaped women; you can balance out your shape and look thinner and slimmer. Choose large prints and don’t be afraid of a little colour. Patterned tops and even jackets will flatter your figure, lengthen your torso, and even define your waist. Wearing busy printed skirts and trousers with a simple, clean-cut top, will also emphasise your slim legs, while taking attention away from your mid area. The ultimate flattering pattern for you however, is the diagonal stripe. A dress with diagonal stripes will slim your figure, balance out the proportions and leave you feeling absolutely gorgeous.
All the Patterns for the Hourglass-Shaped
Large and small patterns flatter an hourglass-shaped woman, considering her height of course. To emphasise your curves and femininity, a dress with a floral print will be ideal. If your hourglass shape needs to be balanced (if your top half is larger than your lower half and vice versa) use the size of the patterns to create the illusion of a more proportional hourglass shape. Slim the area in need with smaller patterns, and place an emphasis on the area you’d like to flaunt with larger print. Experiment with V-neck dresses that gradually transitions from smaller patterns to larger to find the most flattering pattern for your body shape.
Colour your world with patterns, love life, love your body, and dress to impress.
