Because It’s The Standard Of Beauty
The easy and short answer is: “because that’s what today’s standard of beauty dictates,” and while this may be quite true, there are complex factors that can be accredited to our obsession with being and looking slimmer. From the billion-dollar fashion, makeup, medical, diet and advertising industries, oftentimes this “want” is not our choice at all.
While I heavily disagree with this norm, which has been imposed on us as a society, I must make a distinction and admit that the desire to look slimmer does not have to be a negative, harmful or money intensive operation. Of course, when looking slimmer is tied with self worth, as a proxy for “healthy”, or equals to the smallest dress size available, that’s when wanting to look slimmer becomes dangerous.
So, when can “wanting to look slimmer” not translate to dangerous habits, and while we know and realize that looking slimmer can become a dangerous obsession with negative consequences, why do we still aspire to look slimmer?
The answer to our second question is simply because, looking slimmer is sexy, feminine and can even be empowering. Looking slimmer, does not mean being skinny or thin or wearing a size 0 or 2, conversely, looking slimmer means looking “your” slimmest, which means, maintaining your body shape and weight – loving your weight and shape – but also working with your shape and accenting just the right areas of your body to look slimmer. You can be a curvy, sexy, plus size woman and still look slimmer.
Looking Slimmer Equals to Looking Better
We want to look slimmer because we equate “looking slimmer” with “looking better”, but we all know that being slimmer does not mean you also look better, particularly when it comes to fashion. On the other hand, when you dress for your body shape by using the metric of looking slimmer, that’s when you begin to accent your assets: your bust, your curves, your neck, etc. and that’s when you start to look better. This is evident on women that always look confident, elegant and slim. It’s not because of a radical diet that they are upholding to look slimmer, it’s because of their slimming wardrobe and their fashion outfits crafted specifically for their body shape to create the illusion of a slimmer, more balanced figure.
Looking Slimmer Can Be Empowering
Wearing fashion outfits that are suited for your body shape, that gently caress your figure, fall just right and conceal all your insecurities from foreign eyes – thus, making you look slimmer – can leave you feeling confident, comfortable, and even empowered. Moreover, the support our clothes provide, the way our clothes fit and feel on our body can have a direct impact on the way we feel about ourselves. This feeling, however, is not from the visual feedback we receive, as many of us believe, but is rather based on the conversation our skin has with our brain. The way our clothes feel on our body send messages to our brain, which can be interpreted into feeling: flabby, sexy, confident, brilliant, etc.
Whether you want to look slimmer because it’s the trend, because everyone around you is aiming for that slimmer body or slimmer look, or because you want to look and feel sexy and confident, remember, you can look slimmer – without going through extreme and dangerous diets and operations – with the right fashion outfits and by dressing for your body shape.
